Dr. Ann Rogers on connection of weight loss surgery and gene alteration - Penn State Hershey
Ann Rogers, M.D., Director, Penn State Hershey Surgical Weight Loss, discusses the recent Canadian study that shows weight-loss surgery can alter the genes of children born after surgery.
--------------------------
So there's actually a really interesting study that just came out a few weeks ago. It came out in a major journal from a Canadian group, and they were looking at the effects of bariatric surgery on the genetics of the women who had the surgery. So, it's a small study. They looked at children the women had before surgery and children they had afterwards.
And they found that genes that were passed on from the mother were actually changed after weight loss surgery.
And it was almost six thousand genes. Almost all of them had to do with the metabolic syndrome.
Things like diabetes, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure - the things that affect people with weight.
And they found that these genes were being expressed differently in the children of mothers had already had weight loss surgery, and it was showing up as healthier proteins in those kids.
So these kids are likely to be healthier than the ones who had been born to the mothers before they had weight loss surgery.
