Earlier this year, Bloomberg News published its annual survey of the world's 40 healthiest countries. The United States, which is considered the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth, finished 33rd on that list -- just below South Korea, and just above Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Other countries that finished above the U.S. in that survey included Cyprus, which is in full economic collapse, and Cuba, which is ruled by one of the few remaining communist governments.
