It’s #hip to be #healthy, and #HipNJ is helping fight breast cancer by celebrating the 10th anniversary of The Connie Dwyer Breast Center!

Founded in October 2004, The Connie Dwyer Breast Center at Saint Michael’s Medical Center is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art facility providing expert diagnosis and treatment of breast disease. Further, the Center stresses prevention, early detection, and educational outreach programs in northern New Jersey.

#HipNJ's Lisa Marie Latino sat with Dr. Nadine Pappas, the center's medical director and chief breast surgeon, and got to know the amazing woman who is saving so many Garden State lives.

In 2012, Dr. Pappas left her private practice and came to the center because she was so moved by its mission.

There are a lot of women in our community who are having a hard time getting access to healthcare, Dr. Pappas said. At The Connie Dwyer Breast Center, we can do what we need for these women.

The Connie Dwyer Breast Center provides access to charity care, and have the ability to get patients on a Medicaid program through the state of New Jersey. Their program In the Pink ensures that anyone can get their mammogram screenings and (if needed) biopsies, regardless of their ability to pay.

The Connie Dwyer Breast Center provides all-encompassing support for their patients. They take them through the whole medical process, from diagnosis to treatment to maintenance. They have social workers and counseling for mental and spiritual guidance. The Connie Dwyer Breast Center even offers wigs and breast prosthesis bras to help patients look and feel their best during treatment! All of this is done in a bright, cheerful setting with friendly, knowledgable staff.

There are many boutique centers in affluent communities. However, The Connie Dwyer Breast Center has everything and more that those centers can offer, Dr. Pappas boasts.

Dr. Pappas believes the center is going to continue to grow its impact on Newark and the surrounding communities.

We've expanded our team, implemented longer office hours, and now have satellite offices in Belleville and West Orange. We've also added the latest technology, including our 3-D Tomosynthesis mammography.
