Chemo-Sensitivity Testing for Lung Cancer: Dr. Robert Nagourney & Ryan Kuper
Ryan Kuper was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer 2 years ago at 39. His tumor was in-operable, and he was told repeatedly there were no good options for him.
He says he is alive today, and cancer free because instead of giving up, he visited oncologist Robert Nagourney at Rational Therapeutics in Long Beach. By testing Ryan's tumor cells against multiple chemotherapy agents Dr. Nagourney discovered that Ryan's cancer was sensitive to a drug Ryan was told he couldn't get.
The drug that worked for Ryan, Crizatanib, targets the ALK mutation. Ryan's genetic tests showed that he didn't have the ALK gene. But because Dr. Nagourney was so certain Crizantanib was the right drug for Ryan, genetic tests were repeated and ultimately proved Ryan indeed had the gene. After 12 weeks of conventional chemotherapy Ryan got the medication that ultimately put him into remission.
As you'll see in this segment, Ryan is currently cancer free and doing well.
