Dr. Ali Rezai on Brain Computer Interfaces
Ali Rezai, MD, professor of neurosurgery and neuroscience and director of the Ohio State University Center for Neuromodulation, describes a study that showed a paralyzed individual with quadraplegia from spinal cord injury gained more recovery and function with a micro-implant that enables decoding thoughts of movement and recoding that intent through a wearable sleeve to have increasingly sophisticated movement of the hand and arm. In the brief video, he summarizes a plenary lecture he presented May 29, 2017 at the 13th World Congress of the International Neuromodulation Society.
Prominent Ohio State neurosurgeon Ali Rezai leaving for West Virginia University
A leading neuroscientist at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is leaving for a post at West Virginia University and its WVU Medicine health system, officials announced Thursday.
Dr. Ali Rezai has been appointed to lead clinical and research programs in the neurosciences at the newly formed WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, according to university officials.
He will serve as executive chair and vice president of neurosciences for WVU Medicine and as associate dean and the John D. Rockefeller IV tenured professor in neurosciences at the WVU School of Medicine. He will be paid an annual salary of $995,000, according to a university spokeswoman.
Rezai was among physicians who expressed concerns about the leadership at OSU Wexner. It was part of a series of complaints that led to the May resignation of Dr. Sheldon Retchin as chief executive officer. Complaints included that low morale was causing talented doctors to leave.
Rezai has spent more than eight years at Ohio State, where he is the director of the Neurological Institute, the director of the Ross Center for Brain Health and Performance, an associate dean for neuroscience, the Stanley D. and Joan H. Ross Chair in Neuromodulation, and a professor of neurosurgery and neuroscience.
He spent about half of his tenure at Ohio State under former President E. Gordon Gee, who is now president at WVU.
Rezai has been involved in the use of brain implants for treating Parkinson’s disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury. He also has been involved in the development of technology that led to the creation of a company that produces implants to treat chronic pain and headaches.
