Is physical therapy really necessary after joint replacement? - Amit Lahav MD Orthopedic Surgeon
A question I get from my patients before undergoing joint replacement, especially hip and knee replacements, is physical therapy really necessary following surgery? And the answer is yes, within reason. Generally for hip replacements, the main issue is to get up and walk. Adhere by certain precautions following the surgery, but walking is very important, where as knee replacements, motion is the number one thing that has to be concentrated on, and then the strength and mobilization. The best time to get your motion is right after surgery and that is where physical therapy and exercise is very important. There by for knee replacement therapy is actually very important, where for hip replacement it's not as mandatory and generally the patients can do mostly on their own.
