Dr. Edward Magaziner Discusses Undertreated Pain
Edward Magaziner, MD, CEO, New Jersey Interventional Pain Society, Assistant Professor, New York Medical College, Clinical Professor, Robert Wood Johnson University Dept. of Anesthesia and PM&R, Medical Director, Center for Spine, Sports, Pain Management, and Orthopedic Regenerative Medicine, North Brunswick, NJ, discusses undertreated pain in America.
Dr. Magaziner says that, in many ways, pain is undertreated in America.
When pain becomes severe, a patient may find that their physician is not open to the idea of giving them medications to eliminate pain. Dr. Magaziner says that while medications should not be the first line of treatment for chronic pain, if surgeries and other treatments have not worked, he believes a patient should be able to go to a physician and get the necessary medications.
Because a number of physicians and members of the community are not educated about chronic pain, a stigma is attached to the use of these medications. Dr. Magaziner says the stigma is unfortunate because patients can suffer.

Dr. Magaziner says that, in years past, fibromyalgia was not considered a real disease because doctors and researchers could not prove what was causing it. Patients were diagnosed with rheumatism and other conditions. Today, fibromyalgia is recognized as a sensitization disorder, similar to neuropathic disorders, reflex dystrophy and other sensitization disorders.
He says markers are being found in spinal fluid, and that functional MRIs and PET scans are finding abnormalities that show changes in the brains of fibromyalgia patients.
