Full transcript of Dr. Wentworth: My name is Jennifer Wentworth and I'm senior surgeon here in the department of ophthalmology at Graves Gilbert.
I joined the Graves Gilbert team in 1994.
There's a common misconception about cataract, it's not a film that develops on the eye or around the outside of the eye, it's actually a change in the lens in the inside of the eye.
The natural lens is the focus power of the eye and it sits behind the color part of the eye, the iris, and with aging, when we are born it's clear like a piece of glass and with aging it grows denser and harder and loses it's clarity and blurs your vision.
Eventually, vision problems from cataract affect daily functioning and when we can't change your glasses or give you new glasses to improve your vision, the only option is surgery.
So cataract surgery has improved just dramatically since I've been doing surgery for 25 years. Cases used to take over an hour and now we can do a surgery in most cases less than ten minutes and the reason for that is just our improved advanced technology.
We can do the surgery painlessly, we use eye drops now as our primary anesthetic. There's less trauma to the eye because our surgeries are so short so patient’s recovery time is a lot quicker and down town from work is a lot less than it used to be.
The first few days after surgery, actually for the first week, we don't want you to do anything very strenuous. No heavy lifting or straining, usually more than twenty pounds.
The newest advancement is our dropless procedure and at the time of surgery we can actually inject the medications that you would normally use post-operatively inside the eye behind the implant, so that cuts down on the amount of drops that you need to use post-operatively and patients really love that.
We also have newer implant choices available to help you see both near and far and to correct a stigmatism and all these things have just improved the quality of vision that we can achieve after cataract surgery.
It's true, I love what I do. Helping people to see better not only improves their quality of life, but it gives them back their independence.
We get a lot of hugs the day after surgeries and I think all of us at Graves Gilbert put our heart and soul in our jobs and we love what we do as physicians, but for me, giving back the gift of sight, there's just no greater joy.
