Dr. Kathleen Herne, a board certified dermatologist at Sanctuary Medical Center, discusses some helpful tips for avoiding skin cancer with the summer upon us. One in five people will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Utilizing sun screens with SPFs of 30 or higher with broad spectrum coverage containing zinc oxide and/or titatnium dioxide helps protect against skin cancer. Protective clothing such as rash guards, sunglasses and wide brimmed hats are an alternative to sun screen. You should visit a dermatologist once a year for a skin cancer screening. Sun damage can also lead to sun spots, wrinkles and premature aging.
