We sat down with Dr. Peter Millett of The Steadman Clinic during the 3rd Annual Vail Scientific Summit.




The Steadman Philippon Research Institute is dedicated to keeping people of all ages physically active through orthopaedic research and education in the areas of arthritis, healing, rehabilitation, and injury prevention.

Founded in 1988 by orthopaedic surgeon Dr. J. Richard Steadman, the Steadman Philippon Research Institute is an independent, tax-exempt (IRS code 501(c)(3)) charitable organization, employing scientists, researchers, fellows, visiting scholars, and interns.

The Steadman Philippon Research Institute is known throughout the world for our research into the causes, prevention and treatment of orthopaedic disorders. We are committed to solving orthopaedic problems that limit an individual's ability to maintain an active life.

Our research perspective is based on clinical relevance, with a goal of improving the care of the patient. Recognizing that the body's innate healing powers can be harnessed and manipulated to improve the healing process has led to exciting advances in surgical techniques, such as microfracture and innovative rehabilitation developed by Dr. Richard Steadman, and validated at our Institute. The successful outcome of any shoulder surgery is as much dependent on the surgical skills and technique as it is on the rehabilitation protocol. Each individual has his or her own timeframe of progression and treatment response and deserves a made-fit rehabilitation in which healing time lines and specific goals are included. The postoperative rehabilitation begins with close communication between the surgeon, his medical staff and the physical therapy team to discuss the patient's medical history, review surgical findings and procedures, and establish the rehabilitation guidelines. This communication continues throughout the recovery process and is an essential component in ensuring a successful outcome.
Not only the communication within the medical staff is important, but also, obviously, the communication between the medical team and the patient and the patient's compliance to treatment. In order to accomplish this, patient education is mandatory.

The following video's will take you through several aspects of the process of shoulder rehabilitation. Not only are various treatment modalities discussed, but also the changing of surgical dressings, usage and application of specific cold package devices, basics of shoulder anatomy and the functional movements of the shoulder.
