My name is Sonia Bynum and I am a physician with Oregon Kidney and Hypertension Clinic. I am originally from Argentina, and I then completed my medical school in Texas and trained for both Internal Medicine and Nephrology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 4 years ago I moved to Portland, Oregon, and I joined Oregon Kidney and Hypertension Clinic. I have been practicing nephrology here since then. I love the city and all other aspects of Oregon, and I am proud to call this home now.

Nephrology is a very intricate specialty. The kidneys work together very closely with the rest of the body and perform some critical functions that many people are not aware of. This is fascinating to me from a medical and clinical point of view, and overcoming the challenges of this specialty is one of the best rewards for working in this field. But it also provides a great opportunity for helping patients. Helping them understand why the kidneys are important, what they do, and how we can work together to keep them healthy.
I am incredibly thankful for my patients, and for allowing me to participate in such an important part of their life.

I come from a family with a very multicultural background, which helped me from very early on to connect with all kinds of people. This approach has stayed with me throughout my medical career, and I am grateful to have the chance to meet individuals from such different backgrounds.

Me llamo Sonia Bynum y soy nefrologa de profesion. Creci en Argentina y alla estudie bioquimica y administracion de empresas. Como la situacion del pais no era suficientemente estable, decidi mudarme a los Estados Unidos, y aqui complete my educacion en medicina. Estudie primero en Texas y despues complete mis estudios en Medicina Interna y mi especializacion en Nefrologia en Pennsylvania.
Hace cuatro anios me mude a Portland, y desde entonces que estoy practicando nefrologia con Oregon Kidney y Hypertension Clinic. Portland ahora es mi hogar, y nuestra clinica es como nuestra familia.
La practica de nefrologia es complicada porque los riniones hacen tantas funciones imprescindibles para el cuerpo, y los sintomas son muy pocos hasta que la funcion de los riniones es muy baja y ya es demasiado tarde. Este es uno de los puntos claves en nuestro trabajo, y estoy agradecida todos los dias de tener la oportunidad de educar a mis pacientes y que podamos trabajar juntos, en equipo, para mantener una vida saludable.
